I have, I don’t know, 1500 channels of cable, plus no shortage of content by way of the internet, which I have recently connected to 2 of my televisions through Google TV. (and sometimes I still can’t find anything to watch) But each night if I decide to relax in front of the TV to channel surf, I usually end up watching a movie, so I thought I would talk about some of the movies I watch.
The other night I was channel surfing and stopped once again at “Something’s Gotta Give” with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. I have seen this movie (or parts of it) dozens of times, it’s on TV at some point just about every day, and yet I still stop and usually watch until the end. Why? Because it’s great and apparently I still get something out of it. (like Jack’s facial expressions, which are priceless, Keanu Reeves in a wonderfully understated role and of course, Diane Keaton) And the writing is “as good as it gets,” which is another James L Brooks film, also starring Jack and also terrific. ( I know because I have stopped and watched it many times) I guess these movies just make me feel good.
Some others:
The American President (possibly the greatest portrayal of a fictional president ever, his speech at the end still gives me goosebumps)
ShawShank Redemption: (The escape sequence narrated by Morgan Freeman and the scene when he finds the money left by his friend Andy are priceless)
Last night I watch the last half hour of “Big Fish” with Albert Finney, Jessica Lang and Ewan McGregor. I had forgotten how good it was, when the son realizes at his father’s funeral, that all his tall tales were for the most part, true.
Julie and Julia: This movie has really grown on me the more I watch it, only because of the miraculous performance by Meryl Streep. Sandra Bullock was great, but the Oscar should have gone to Meryl. Stanley Tucci is no slouch either.
Forrest Gump: I don’t always stop and watch, but often do especially to watch the last 30 mins.
Kate & Leopold: Just for Hugh Jackman, he was great.
I will have more on this in the future, including some thought on TV shows and Music.
